Jamie Grover is the "Autism on the Seas" Director of Group Development.  Jamie comes to us from the University Center for Developmental Disabilities at California State University-San Bernardino (UCDD), where he served as the Program Coordinator.

Our staff is screened and selected by Jamie to assist us on every cruise.  The majority of the staff that is chosen have a degree, or are students working on a degree in some form of child development, and has experience working with children and adults of all ages with developmental disabilities.  Most of our staff has worked with us more than once.

Cruise Line / Resort Staff
Included in your Cruise/Resort cost

Staff of the Cruise Line / Resort Children's Programs have varying degrees of experience and knowledge of developmental disabilities, including autism, and are personally trained and briefed on our children by our Group Director (usually Jamie) on every Group cruise/resort stay or briefed by our staff directly to the Children's Program Manager for our Individual Cruise Bookings.

Our respite care is customized for each Group Cruise/Resort Stay depending on the size and special needs of the group.  Our general provisions for respite include, but are not limited to the following, and are subject to change depending on the size of the group, class of ship or resort:

- Nightly and daily sessions supervised by our staff, are designed to care for our special
   needs guests. 

- On our days at sea (or most every day during our Resort Stays) in our conference room during
   selected Private activities such as crafts, movie time, bingo, games, etc., supervised by our
   staff.

- On our days at sea in the Children's Program area/rooms during Private sessions
   conducted by the Cruise Line Children Program staff, and supervised by our staff.

 

Respite AotS Staff Ratio

The ratio of our AotS staff per special needs guest varies depending on the size of the group.  Our general guideline is a minimum of 3 to 1. 

 

Respite and Activities Groups 

Our Special Needs Guests are divided into appropriate Groups.  Each Group has an AotS Staff "Lead".


Children Group  

Staff for our special needs Children will be led by our AotS "Staff Coordinator".
- A Q&A session will coordinated by our Group Director at the beginning of the cruise/resort stay
   to review intended activities and Respite Service.
- The Staff will coordinate all Respite activities with the children.
- The Staff will assist the children during all Group Activities.
- Typical Children Respite Activities (supervised by our Staff) may include, but are not limited
    to: Children's Center Activities (each cruise line and ship has age appropriate toys,
    children's games, video games, cruise line staff conducted games, etc),
Movies, Face
    Painting, Crafts, etc

Teen Group 
Staff for our special needs Teens will be led by a "Teen Lead" AotS Staff member.
- The Teen Lead will meet with parents at the beginning of the cruise/resort stay to review
   intended activities for the cruise.
- The Teen Lead will coordinate all Respite activities with the teens.
- The Teen Lead will assist the teens during all Group Activities.
- Typical Teen Respite Activities (supervised by our Staff) may include, but are not limited to:
   Teen Center Activities (Dancing, Listening to Music, Video Games),
Movies, Hot Tub,
   Theatre Shows, Face Painting, Crafts, Scavenger Hunts, Karaoke, Arcade Games
   (separate fees apply), Mini-Golf, Basketball/Open Court Ball Games, Ping-Pong, Shuffle
    Board, Dancing, Board Games, etc

 

Adult Group  
Staff for our special needs Adults will be led by an "Adult Lead" AotS Staff member.
- The Adult Lead will meet with parents at the beginning of the cruise/resort stay to review
   intended activities for the cruise.
- The Adult Lead will be assisted by other AotS Staff as needed.
- The Adult Lead will coordinate all Respite activities with the adults.
- The Adult Lead will assist the adults during all Group Activities.
- Typical Adult Respite Activities (supervised by our Staff) may include, but are not limited to:
   
Movies, Hot Tub, Theatre Shows, Face Painting, Crafts, Scavenger Hunts, Karaoke, Arcade
    Games (separate  fees apply), Mini-Golf, Basketball/Open Court Ball Games, Ping-Pong,
    Shuffle Board,  Dancing, Board Games, etc
 

 
   

AotS 1-on-1 Respite Service
AotS GROUP CRUISES and

Not included in your Cruise/Resort cost, additional fee applies, see below.
 

We understand that some of our parents/guardians may require, or may like to have, one-on-one Respite care for their special needs child during their cruise/resort stay.  We offer the opportunity for you to request one (or more) of our AotS Staff to provide you with one-on-one care for your special needs children traveling with you.

AotS 1-on-1 provides you with one of our staff members for the care of your minor or
adult guest travelling with you during these times
:

- At all Group activities and events your special needs guest participates in.
  A sample activity/event schedule can be sent to you (upon request) to view these times
  in more detail, before you choose to use this service.

- During all of the Group activities and events your special needs guest chooses not
  to participate in, or you choose for them not to participate in, (a mutually agreed
  upon substitute activity and location will take its place).

- To accompany you on two Port Excursions for 7-night or longer cruises/resort stays.

- To accompany you on one Port Excursion for 6-night or shorter cruises/resort stays.

- To sit with you, and have dinner with your family each night.

Pricing and availability:

- The availability of this service is based on the availability of our Staffing resources, but we
  should be able to accommodate every request.

- The ONLY charge for this service is the price of the individual cabin/room charge for the Staff
   Member.

- Price is based on the least expensive cabin/room available at the time of the request. 

- You may request more than one Staff Member.

- A non-refundable deposit must be made at time of securing this service.

Babysitting 
AotS GROUP CRUISES and RESORT STAYS ONLY
Not included in your Cruise/Resort cost, additional fee applies, see below.

Our staff may be available for after hours in-cabin/room babysitting.  This service is not provided as a service of "Autism on the Seas" but between you and our staff.  Rate negotiations are between the family and staff member.   Please feel free to inquire to our Group Director once onboard or at the resort.  This is not a service that can be arranged prior to the cruise/resort stay.


Port Excursion Assistance 

AotS GROUP CRUISES and RESORT STAYS ONLY
Not included in your Cruise/Resort cost, additional fee applies, see below.

Families are free to ask our staff to join them on port excursions to assist with small groups or individual families.  This service is not provided as a service of "Autism on the Seas" but between you and our staff.  This service requires the fee of the excursion to be paid for the staff member by the family or small group, and any other rate negotiations are between the staff member and the family.  Please feel free to inquire to our Group Director once onboard or at the resort.  This is not a service that can be arranged prior to the cruise or resort stay.
